Exploring in Den Bosch: Cobblestones and Residency

During my time studying in the Netherlands, a day trip to Den Bosch became part adventure, part mission. Our main goal was to get our student residency sorted, but of course, we couldn’t resist exploring the city while we were there. And I’m so glad we did — this charming city immediately stole my heart.

Den Bosch feels like a storybook come to life. Winding streets, picturesque canals, and historic buildings make you want to stop at every corner and look up. The Binnendieze canals, some running beneath the city itself, are especially magical. Following the little waterways past cafés, boutiques, and flower-lined bridges, naturally I couldn’t stop snapping photos!

Of course, a visit to Den Bosch wouldn’t be complete without a Bossche Bol, the city’s famous chocolate pastry. Warm, gooey, and decadently chocolatey, it was the perfect little indulgence as we wandered the streets and paused to take in the scenery.

The city also boasts St. John’s Cathedral, a gothic masterpiece with intricate details that made me stop in awe. Fun fact: Den Bosch, officially called ‘s-Hertogenbosch, dates back to the 12th century and was historically a fortified city. It’s also the birthplace of Hieronymus Bosch, the surreal painter known for his fantastical imagery — which makes wandering the streets feel a little like stepping into one of his dreamlike worlds.

Even with residency paperwork in mind, part of the joy was simply wandering without a plan – as we usually do. Discovering hidden courtyards, quaint bookshops, and cozy cafés where locals sipped coffee was definitely on the agenda.

Here’s my Den Bosch photo diary with snaps of canals and cobblestones, capturing the Dutch historic charm and of course, getting our residency! It’s definitely the kind of city that makes errands feel like a mini adventure.
