Everyone wants to become the best version of themselves, but few actually do it. Have you stopped and asked the question why? There’s always some form of limiting belief that stops us from doing the things we want (and need) to do to achieve this success. But you’re here, reading this post and that means, like me, you’re on a quest to become the best version of YOU and start living as your best self.

So, what does it mean to become the best version of you? What does living as your best self actually mean?

The definition of “best self” means your version of the best form of yourself. It’s subjective. Your version of what your best self looks like may not necessarily be the same as someone else’s version. It’s different from your families, friends and even work colleagues.

That’s okay!

It should be, because only YOU know what your best self should like. Often, we get so wrapped up in wondering what other people will think if we do a certain thing, or act a certain way, but it’s those thoughts that often prevent us from becoming truly authentic and our true best selves.

It’s all about what YOU think about yourself (not anyone else’s thoughts).

Your best self means the version of you where you are in control of your life. It’s where you make decisions for yourself and ultimately, become more empowered to decide what makes you happy. It’s about taking control. You start becoming more empowered to make those choices that will make you happy over anyone else.

It’s also important to remember that becoming your best self is not a quick process. Finding your best self takes time. It takes time to figure out what you want and time to figure out what makes you happy.

It’s a process.

If you ask me, that’s also the best part! It can be a pretty fun journey to find your best self.

Staying Motivated on Your Journey to Become Your Best Self

So how do you find the motivation to be become your best self? Finding motivation can be hard. Especially when there are long workdays and other responsibilities that as adults, we have to do.

But that’s not a good enough reason to NOT focus on YOU.

Becoming your best self should be part of adulting – you owe it to yourself figure out who you are. Your motivation is the why behind wanting to become the best version of yourself. If you don’t know the why, it’s really easy to lose track of all the effort you’re making.

There are two types of motivation. We call this intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation – this is something driven by your values and beliefs.

Extrinsic motivation – this is triggered by external factors such as recognition or reward.

The ideal journey to your best self should be a mix between both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Find something driven by your belief system and gear that towards a particular goal or reward. For example, you want to become more confident so you can start expressing your ideas at work in the boardroom. You know this will lead to recognition and possibly a raise. That’s a combination of both, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to become a better version of you, use it to anchor yourself so you can stay on track of your goals.

How Do You Become the Best Version of Yourself

So how do you actually become the best version of yourself? What are some of the things you can do? Here are 10 essential tips to help you become your best self and live your best possible life.

Visualize Your Future Self

Take a minute to sit back and think about what does your best self actually look like? What does she/he do? How does she/he speak? What does she/he do first thing in the morning? Perhaps the last thing at night? Asking these questions will help you picture what your best self looks like.

Write down a list of words that are measurable and obtainable that describes your best self. Write them down in a journal or create a vision board that helps you visualize and remember what you are working towards.

Tackle Your Goals

Define what your goals are and then start with the simple ones. These will be easier to achieve, and quickly. This will then help you build confidence and gear up more motivation to keep on going. With each habit you start bringing into your lifestyle, you start making small, more manageable changes to help you work towards becoming this better version of you.

Position Your Goals

Remember that your goals have to match your purpose. That means each goal must be linked to the bigger picture of what you’re trying to achieve. What is your why? Take some time to review your goals and ensure they are still aligned with what your life purpose is.

Love Yourself

We often find ourselves in this negative cycle of bad self-talk when things don’t work out. You have to be able to love yourself as you are to improve yourself. Accept who you are and where you are now with no judgement and criticism because you are now starting this new journey to become a better you.

This will help you step out of your comfort zone without fear. Part of becoming your best self is learning how to be your own best friend.

Don’t Be Afraid

The fear of failure often makes us stop in our tracks. It prevents us from starting. There are many reasons why and where that fear comes from – perhaps we’re afraid of what people will think. Perhaps we’re afraid of how we would feel if it doesn’t work out. Remember that failure is a natural part of life. It happens to everyone – including the people you idolize as successful!

It’s okay to fail. That’s when you gain valuable lessons that help propel you forward into your best self and the successful life you’re trying to build.

STOP Procrastinating!

This is the biggest way to self-sabotage and slow down your growth. Maybe you’re waiting for the perfect time to start. Maybe you’re planning everything out to the smallest detail before you can begin. Stop doing that! If you’re struggling to start, then give yourself a deadline. Take some time and define your actions. Set small goals that are easy to work towards. When you hit that date, JUST START! KEEP GOING! The rest will fall into place.

Forget About Other People

It’s time to put yourself first and just focus on YOU. Everyone else? Doesn’t matter! They aren’t going to live your best life… you are. It’s time to start becoming selfish and put yourself first.

Stop Judging Others

To become the best version of yourself, you need to eliminate all forms of negative energy. When you put out bad vibes, remember the universe sees and resonates with it. We don’t know everyone’s journey and what’s easy for us, may be difficult for them and vice versa. Put your head down, get your mind in the game and focus on YOU.

Stop the Negative Self-Talk

It’s so easy to fall back into the negative habit of bad mouthing yourself when something doesn’t work out. Try something different – put a positive spin on things and see how your perspective begins to change! It will also help motivate you and build your confidence.

Just Show Up

It doesn’t matter if you’re not an expert. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to do something. The key is to just show up and start. You’ll at least be 2% closer to your best self than if you didn’t show up at all!

Remember growing into your best self is a long journey, but it is definitely an adventurous one. Along the way you’ll see lots of fun and exciting things. Some things may be scary too. But if you start today, you’ll be well on your way to becoming the best version of yourself that you could possibly be.
