It’s that time of year when we all feel really inspired to set goals and start afresh. I’ve been spending my first few days of the year constantly looking at my goals and journaling. I also thought I’d try something new this year – visualising and manifesting what I want. I’m a strong believer of putting my goals down on paper, but often that goes into a book which remains closed for larger parts of the year. I do go back and look at those goals and of course I spend time working on them, but I don’t look at my lists as often as I’d like. That’s why I think a vision board is going to be a great idea to achieving all I set out for this year.
A vision board or dream board is a pretty great way to inspire yourself to achieve your goals and dreams and its a really great way to maximize the art of manifesting what you want. Jack Canfield once said, “your brain will work tirelessly to achieve the statements you give your subconscious mind. And when those statements are the affirmations and images of your goals, you are destined to achieve them.” and I truly believe in this.

Our minds respond more strongly to visual stimulation so using a vision board allows you to represent your goals or dreams with images that in turn strengthen your emotions, will power and overall inspiration. By placing visual a representation of your goals and dreams in one place that your can see everyday, you’ll not only inspire yourself but also start imagining that they have come true but you will also send out positive vibes into the universe which in turn come back to you.

What is a vision board?
A vision board is really any board of any sort that contains a collage of images that represent your goals and dreams and which inspires you to go out and achieve them. The board itself can be bought from any local store, or you could just use an A4 or A3 sheet of cardboard which is then framed.
How to set your goals using a vision board?
The best way to achieve your goals is to be constantly reminded of them everyday! This way you’ll always be looking for ways to bring yourself closer to what you desire. Your vision board should be placed somewhere you can see it everyday so you can constantly motivate yourself to visualize your goals and dreams. The explanation behind this is that visualization can activate the creative powers of your subconscious mind. This in turn programs your brain to make use of available resources to achieve your goals. These resources were most likely always there but may have skipped your attention on an ordinary day when you weren’t reminded of your goals and dreams.

How do you create a vision board?
Create a list of goals that you’re focusing on
Before you can create your vision board, you first have to know what your goals are. Take some time to sit down and really think about what it is you want to achieve in this lifetime and what you really want your ideal life to look like. Close your eyes and visualise what you’d like to achieve within the next 12 months and then write these down.
Find the right board
Creating vision boards are really easy and fun to do. You’ll need to find a suitable board to stick your pictures and affirmations on. Usually a sturdy piece of cardboard will do or even a cork board. You actually don’t have to be fussy about the type of board you use, even an A4 / A3 sheet of paper can be used and framed.

Find pictures that represent your ideal future
Next find pictures that represent the experiences, dreams, goals and possessions that you want to attract in your life. These images can be cut out of old magazines, downloaded from Pinterest or perhaps something you have on your desk already. Basically anything that speaks to you, motivates you and which inspires you will work. These images should represent your purpose and your ideal future and create a positive feeling when you look at them.
Common inspirational sources include:
- Postcards
- Magazines
- Catalogues
- The Internet (Pinterest, Tumbler, etc)
- Quotes of any kind
Affirmations
Next look for some positive words, affirmations, inspirational words and quotes that make you feel inspired and good about life. Cut these out for your board as well.
Make a collage out of your photos
Once you have collected your pictures and affirmations, it’s time to start making your vision board. Start by placing your pictures and affirmations on the board so you get a feel for the layout. You want something that is neat and nicely spaced out. Then glue your pictures and affirmations to the board.
Spend some time visualising every day
You should place your vision board somewhere you can see it everyday. Take a few moments every day or night to look at your vision board so that your inspirational images are at the top of your mind. See yourself already living the life you’ve dreamed of and believe it’s already yours!
