20 Photos that will make you want to get on a microlight (like right now!)

If you haven’t realized yet, I’m crazy. I do all sorts of strangely weird things on my travels and I absolutely love it. Who was it that said – life is a daring adventure or nothing at all -ah yes! Helen Keller. She was on to something, you know. Recently my sister and I spent all of Sunday morning taking our first microlight lesson. Here are twenty photos that will make you want to get on a microlight right now (even if you’re a little scared!)

A microlight is a small plane that can carry at most two people. It flies at relatively low speeds when compared to an actual plane but it’s open cockpit and light weight means that your experience will be different every time!

Depending on the wind speed and varying weather conditions, it can get a little bumpy (but still fun)! The pilot talks you through the flying process.

We flew along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, starting inland before moving out about 60 meters over the Indian Ocean.

If the ocean is calm enough, you may even see dolphins or sharks feeding down below. None today, I’m afraid but still a great view!

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR MICROLIGHTING

Dress accordingly: since it’ an open plane, it can get quite cold up there, so be sure to take a jacket and wear closed shoes.

Number of people: the microlight can only hold two people. This is usually you and the pilot who will steer the plane. If you’re lucky, he may even let you steer after a while.

Wind speed and weather patterns: depending on the wind speed, your flight may or may not be cancelled. If you’re unsure, call your instructor first thing in the morning to check if they will still be flying.

I've visited over twenty countries, published a Environmental Science encyclopaedia and somewhere along the way started a science communication company to help students and corporates translate that hard-to-read data generated in a lab. Other than that, I'm just searching for the magic still hidden in the world.
